Plastics, Recycling & Biodegradable Information

We supply a range of different types of plastics, here we have provided some information on them.

Polypropylene

This plastic is commonly used to make product packaging, lunch boxes, margarine containers, prescription bottles and car parts.

PP can be bent repeatedly and not break, so is useful for applications such as lids but is susceptible to UV degradation.

Polystyrene

Usually the most commonly known plastic, "foam" polystyrene is used to make coffee cups, takeaway containers whereas "sheet" or "moulded" polystyrene is used to make CD cases, plastic cutlery and razors.

Our biodegradable glasses use polystyrene and an EU approved additive, this allows them to biodegrade. Check out this page for more info on our biodegradable glasses

Other

Code 7 describes plastics which are not included in any of the other categories.

Commonly under this section are Polycarbonate and Polylactide, which are usually used in baby bottles, floppy disks and medical storage containers.

We make our best selling super sturdy glasses from this material, too.

We encourage you to do your bit for the environment and recycle responsibly.

Our non-biodegradable glasses should be placed in your plastic recycling bin in accordance with instructions from your local authority. The types of plastic we use, polystyrene and polypropylene are both readily recycled so rinse them out, pop them in your recycling bin.

Our biodegradable glasses can also be placed in the same bin or you can add them to your garden compost, provided your council allow this. The base material is polystyrene but with a biodegradable additive. The additive allows the microbes in both compost environments and landfill environments to decompose the plastic from deep within, not just on the surface. This allows the bacteria and fungus to create large caves increasing the area that can decompose.

Tests have shown a baseline bio-degradation in one year of 60%. This could be much higher depending on variable circumstances such as temperature, exposure to air and more.

All our glasses are manufactured in the UK and produced in a BRC accredited factory.

The BRC Global Standard for Food Safety is a product and process certification standard known for compliance to industry best practices. Certification is achieved by undertaking a third-party audit against Standard requirements by an accredited certification body (CB). BRC rates CBs on their technical performance and efficiency in customer service. Both FoodChain ID Certification in the UK and America are highly-rated CBs providing accredited BRC certification globally.
